JUNE 27 IS NATIONAL HIV TESTING DAY

African Americans are the single most affected group by HIV/AIDS and have been disproportionately affected since the beginning of the epidemic.  In 2003, African-Americans represented 13% of the population; however we were 40% of the total AIDS cases and half of all newly diagnosed HIV/AIDS cases.  The number of women and youth with AIDS in this group have been on the rise. African-American women accounted for 67% of new AIDS cases among all women in 2003, and African-American teens ages 13-19 were 65% of all cases among teens in 2002. (from CDC, and the Henry J. Kaiser Foundation)
- -HIV testing is quick, painless, confidential, and FREE.  You may contact AIDS Action Coalition at 536-4700 to get a test with results in 20 minutes.  How positive are you that you're negative?  Take the test!

PROFESSIONAL TRAINING: Bridges Out of Poverty Workshop

Christian Womens Job Corps of Madison County, AL is pleased to offer a one-day workshop on August 17, 2007 to professionals who work with those in poverty. Authentic communication requires people to speak the same language. If your work day involves communicating with people caught in the cycle of generational poverty, do you really know what they are telling you when they answer your questions?  Do they know what you want to know from them? Genuine change can happen with people when they are able truly to communicate with the people in the places they want to go. BRIDGES OUT OF POVERTY workshop will teach you new skills to be able to increase your listening, thinking, and speaking skills.  Then you are better equipped as you help teach and understand the people you are helping to reach a higher level of their potential than their circumstances might allow.
